Storing Oils
Bottles of Oils Oils should be stored in a glass container and sealed appropriately to keep them from evaporating or bleeding out through the walls of the container. It is better to use darker glass, brown or dark blue -- or anything opaque that is dark enough to prevent the sunlight from aging the oils in an untimely fashion. Our oils, essential or blended, are always as organic as possible. In other words, we use a natural jojoba base for blends, and essential oils in blends whenever available. These organic materials will decompose over time, so the less sunlight allowed to reach the oil, the better.
Oils are also longer lived when stored in cool places. Excess heat will simply serve to decompose the oil faster. One thing to note, most glass bottles now have plastic lids with a synthetic gasket or washer to keep the oils from leaking through the seal of the lid. These, along with the rubber portion of eye-droppers, will decompose with time. Oils left untended can end up bleeding out of their containers and staining their surroundings. Furthermore, some essential oils are highly volatile and might be flammable. Store them away from heat sources, not only to keep them from decomposing but to keep them also from combusting.
The seal between vial and lid can become gummy. It is wise to clean this off with a clean cloth and warm water, being careful not to get dirt into the oil. If you like, you can even transfer the oil to a new, clean container and then simply wash the old one thoroughly.
Keep in mind also that when you use the oils, you can contaminate them with your own body oils if you put your skin to the mouth of the vial in order to apply the oil. Glass rods or eye droppers are better for dispensing oils.
Different oils will decompose and evaporate at different rates due to their chemical compositions, but you can definitely prolong the shelf life of a fine oil by taking proper care to store it well.
